Observability Playbooks

Observability and IT Monitoring is a complex practice which requires understanding of various architectures, vendor platforms, enterprise applications, a portfolio of monitoring technologies, knowledgable team member and defined IT processes and practices across a variety of operating scenarios. These include traditional data centers, software as a service (SaaS), cloud, platform as a service (PaaS), hybrid and multi-cloud. The permutations of observability practices can quickly overwhelm even the most adept and experienced practitioners.

Effective observability teams develop consolidated process models - often called “playbooks,” which integrate people, process, technology considerations and instructions for specific IT business services. Best practice playbooks contain a variety of information depending on the organization, but at a minimum should include the following:

  • System Overview, Description and Runtime Architecture

  • Description of Deployed Observability and Relevant System Components Being Monitoring

  • Event, Incident and Problem Management Processes Relevant for This System

  • RACI Matrix of Observability and System Stakeholders

  • Alerting, dashboarding, reporting and additional analytics

  • Relevant Integrations

  • Relevant Automations

  • Training resources

  • Performance and Outage Impact Details (including costs)
